Sean Duffy, University of Birmingham

Biography

Sean has been Director of IT Services at the University of Birmingham for almost five years.  He is responsible for the bulk of IT services across the University, including high performance computing, student clusters and core business systems.  Prior to this, he worked in the manufacturing industry based in UK, Holland and Canada - holding various posts as Business Systems Director and Global Infrastructure Director in several sectors - flavours and fragrances manufacturing, and commercial explosives.  He is currently Chair of the Russell Group IT Directors (RUGIT) and jointly leads the focus within the Russell Group IT Directors (RUGIT) on Open Access Research Data

Abstract

Practical experiences of tightening information security

Universities, like other organisations, are well versed on the techniques, solutions and management approaches for addressing the traditional information security challenges.  However the rapidly changing consumer / end-user profile, establishing mobile ICT as the primary platform rather than an after-thought, has meant a rethink of the overall approach to information security.  Sean will share some of the practical experiences of responding to these changing environments and user demands
